A very big THANK YOU to everyone who came to and supported Castledon's Charity Curry Night at The Tandoori Parlour on Sunday 9th October.
A great time was had by all ( - I think!) and after a lovely meal we were entertained by Andy & Jan aka 'Billy Jan and Hank Spears'!

Apart from us all having a greyt evening, your generosity helped us to raise over £700 - a fantastic amount that will help keep the wolf from the door for a bit longer!

If anyone has any photos of the evening, we'd love to see them!

The feedback that we got from the last one was very positive and everyone said how good the food was.

What a busy weekend!

Well, this weekend is a BIG one for Castledon!
Kelly Perryman is doing her 52 mile sponsored walk to raise funds for us. Her aim is to raise £1000 and she's NEARLY there! It would be wonderful if we could get to that elusive figure.....
If you're able to spare a few pounds for the hounds, Kelly's donation page can be found here: Also, if you're a tax payer, be sure to tick the Gift Aid box - now that we're a charity, we can get extra money from the taxman at the end of the financial year!

It would also be great if any of you and your dogs could join us to welcome Kelly home at the finish of the walk on Sunday, at the Discovery Centre, Great Notley Country Park (the venue of the fortnightly Greyhound Walk)
Kelly aims to be there at approx 4.45 - why not get there a bit early and take your hounds for a stroll and grab a coffee in the cafe?
There are also plenty of pubs along the way where you can cheer her along,too - we're sure she'd be glad to see you!

On the Saturday, we've also got a stall at Suffolk Dog Day, which is being held at Helmingham Hall. Last year, this show was our favourite one - it's a great day out for hounds and humans alike.

So, if you're free anytime over the weekend, why not pop along to see us at one of our 'events'? It would be great to see you!

Congratulations to Joanne, who won best in show at the dog show which was held after the GBGW at Chelmsford today.
Continuing the Castledon ex-resident success, Macy also came first in her class (best veteran)and was also best in show reserve with Ruby coming third in her class (prettiest bitch)

Great British Greyhound Walk!

This coming Sunday, 26th June it's the Great British Greyhound Walk, where greyhounds will be walking at various venues around the country at 10.00 am.
Castledon will be attending the walk at Chelmsford, which is being held at Central Park.
We'll also have a stall there and Carly will be setting up the famous Castledon Paw Parlour in readiness for the queue of hounds eager to get their nails clipped and teeth cleaned!

If you're able to get to Chelmsford it would be great to see you, but if not, why not find out if there's a walk in your area?

Greyhounds at The Greyhound......

Had a lovely day today at The Greyhound Pub, Little Warley where we had an awareness day and get together.
We took Harley and Gucci along from the kennels, where they showed just what great pets greyhounds make - they were SO well behaved and won a few hearts!
Thank you to eveyone who came along and supported us - we hope that you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did!
As we left, the landlady said that we'd be welcome back any time and suggested that we might like to hold another event sometime in September - any takers?!

Had a fantastic day at the Greyhound Walks Show on Easter Sunday. Carly's nail clipping and teeth polishing clinic was SO successful - maybe she should think about doing it full time!
Linda and David did us a brilliant doggy tombola - it put our usual 'human' one to shame! Thanks for your support, guys! :)
Thank you to everyone who supported the Castledon stall and well done to all the hounds, who were so well-behaved ( -apart from the naughty whippet!)

This Saturday we have a stall at the Essex Working Trials companion dog show, at the Essex Police HQ sports pavillion field in Chelmsford. The Society have kindly nominated Castledon to be the beneficiaries of the profits from the event :)
The doors open at 10.30, with judging from 12.00.

Greyhound Walks Show

Just getting everything together for the Greyhound Walks Show on Sunday.
We'll be taking along our tombola, Carly will be offering her nail clipping and teeth de-scaling service and we'll hopefully be offering a range of dog beds and vet bedding for sale, too along with our usual range of collars etc.
Linda and David are kindly running a 'doggy' tombola, so your best mate can win a prize, too!

If anyone has any donations for our tombola, please feel free to bring them along with you as our 'stock' is running a bit low and we have several events coming up soon. Items such as sweets, biscuits, un-wanted/un-loved presents would be ideal and much appreciated :)
It looks as if it's going to be a very warm day, so please be sure to bring plenty of water with you for your dogs and make sure that they don't get over-heated.
We will of course, have a big bowl of water on our stall!

Hope to see LOADS of you there - and here's hoping that it'll be an enjoyable and profitable day!

Thank you to all of you who supported and attended the Castledon Curry Night last night.
All together, there were 101 of us and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
The food was very nice (- ooh, those onion bahjees!)and the company even better.
Thank you to those of you who also bought raffle tickets - your generosity pushed the total that we made to over £1000! :))))

Next stop - the Castledon 'greyhound-friendly' quiz night on 9th July!

Stall at Animal Charity Fayre

On Saturday 20th November we have been invited to have a stall at an Animal Charity Fayre in South Woodham Ferrers.
We will be taking along our good ol' tombola, with plenty of prizes and also a selection of greyhound collars and toasty warm coats to spoil your hound with.
The event is only on for 2 hours so if you're free, please do pop in and see us!

Unfortunately, dogs aren't allowed in the hall, but you could use this to your advantage to make sure that your dog gets some real suprise presents at Christmas!

Howl-o-ween report

Had a great evening at Vanity Fur's Howl-o-ween event yesterday.

Was lovely to see SO many greyhounds in attendance - as usual they were all impeccably behaved and did their breed credit.

Not sure who actually won the fancy dress, but there were lots of greyhounds in their seasonal outfits - witches, devils and dracula amongst them. Mind you, i'm not so sure that they were very impressed with being dressed up!

Thanks to everyone who supported us and to Stephanie and the gang at Vanity Fur for inviting us once again :)

Claw Clipping Extravaganza!

Look out dogs, Carly's Claw Clipping Clinic is on the road again!

This coming Sunday (10th Oct) we will be at the Greyhound Walks walk at the Braintree Discovery Centre and next Sunday (17th Oct) we'll be at the Rickmansworth walk.
So, if you're dog is in need of a pawdicure, be sure to come along!
We'll be taking along some of our dogs who need homes, too.

We have also just taken delivery of our lovely new Castledon car stickers, which will be available for sale at £2 each.

On Saturday 23rd October, Castledon have been invited to once again have a stall at Vanity Fur's annual 'Howl-o-ween' event.
Vanity Fur is a pet bakery, boutique and spa located in Stable Mews, Leigh on sea ( - behind The Carlton Pub - hic, hic!)
This year, the event takes place between 4 and 7 o'clock, with fun and games for dogs and humans alike!
There's a fancy dress competition for pooches, so if your dog likes to dress up (!), they could be in with a chance of winning a prize!
Vanity Fur are kindly sharing the proceeds of the event with ourselves, Hornchurch Animal Rescue and Acres Way Kennels.
So if you're free and fancy a trip out, do pop along and see us!

Weekend of fun and fundraising

Had a very successful and enjoyable weekend!

Our 'Greyhounds at The Greyhound' event was fantastic - it was lovely to see so many of our ex-Castledon residents and their owners along with other greyhound supporters.
We really couldn't believe how many turned up - it wasn't an official count, but we were told that there were at least 40 dogs at one time!
The Mayor of Brentwood turned up to lend his support and Matt, the landlord, was very welcoming. He was SO impressed at how well-behaved all the dogs were and has invited us back to hold another event in the spring!
Ozzie and Summer had a trip out from the kennels and enjoyed all the attention and admiring glances - Ozzie in particular enjoyed weeing over the herb garden - sorry Matt! :)
As well as being a nice social event, thanks to the generosity of everyone we raised a good sum for our rescue.
Thanks to Claire (Slippy's mum)for organising the event and running the stall :)

It was our first time at the WHAM show (standing for 'Woofers, Hounds and Mutts', incase you were wondering!)and again we had a very successful day. The weather forecast looked grim, but luckily the rain held off until about 3 o'clock, by which time most of the showing had finished. Honarary Castledon dog, Poppy came third in the scurry - go Poppy!
Carly had the cutest customer for claw clipping - Pixie the chihuahua, who was as good as gold!
Greyhounds seemed to outnumber any other breed of dog there, showing just how popular they are and what good pets they make.

After such a busy weekend, think it's an early night tonight for me and the dogs after we've bagged up all the pound coins!

"GREYHOUNDS AT THE GREYHOUND" EVENT

SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 2010 FROM 12 NOON

CALLING ALL GREYHOUNDS OWNERS!!

Matt Bewers, the Landlord of The Greyhound Public House in Brentwood, has kindly agreed to host Castledon Greyhound Rescue's first "Greyhounds at The Greyhound Event" on Saturday 25th September 2010.

Castledon have been invited to bring our awareness stand and tombola to the pub and we will be taking some of our Greyhounds that need re-homing with us too.

Matt is a dog lover and is very keen to promote the lovely dogs that bear the name of his pub and their need for happy and loving homes.

The local newspaper, The Brentwood Gazette and even Brentwood's Mayor (a friend of Castledon!) will be invited to come along so this really is a great opportunity for Castledon to promote Greyhounds as wonderful loving pets and also to raise some much needed funds for the kennels.

THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP! PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT THIS EVENT. WE NEED AS MANY GREYHOUNDS THERE AS POSSIBLE.

We are hoping many Brentwood residents will hear that there are lots of lovely doggies to meet at the pub and it would be great if there were lots of Greyhound owners there, singing their praises (as you always do!)

The pub itself is in a little hamlet outside Brentwood close to Thorndon Country Park ( a great place to walk). It has seats overlooking countryside at the front and a lovely large beer garden at the back for the doggies to relax in (dogs, however, are not allowed in the restaurant). Castledon success at the Romford Show!

Last Sunday was the annual retired greyhound show at Romford Stadium and Castledon hounds did us proud!
Every Castledon hound that entered got placed :)
Quite an achievement - Lennie, Sophie, Suzie, Slippy, Tootsie, Hero, Daisy, Johnny and Holly we are very proud of you all!
Congratulations especially to Tootsie and Slippy who both won red rosettes in their respective classes. Carly,(Tootsie's owner) and Claire, Dean and Freddie (Slippy's owners) all deserve a pat on the back for turning out such eye-catching hounds. The judge at the show is obviously very discerning - contenders for 'Best in Show' next year?!

Perfect Sunday

Today was the perfect Sunday - apart from not having a lay-in! :)
Went on the GW walk at Rickmansworth Aquadrome, taking along Elsa and Ruby from the kennels who are looking for a home.
After a lovely walk, we stopped outside the cafe where it was lovely to catch up with the many Castledon hounds and their owners that were in attendance - Tink, Sonny, Lennie, Bella and Ranger and of course, Lacey and Duke.
Carly's Claw Clipping Clinic was as popular as ever - maybe something to do with the chicken 'reward' that the dogs get after their pawdicure!
We raised a nice sum for our rescue, so thank you to everyone who supported us.

To finish off a perfect day, when we took Ruby and Elsa back to the kennels, Dumbo stopped off to share his birthday cake with us all!

Suffolk Dog Day

We had a fantastic time at Suffolk Dog Day on Sunday.
The venue for the show was Helmingham Hall - an impressive stately home with the most beautiful grounds.
There were so many dogs and their owners in attendance - apparently people were queuing around the lanes for up to 40 minutes just to get in the car park!
We had a really successful day, and met some lovely dogs and owners.
It was great to see Sue and Dixie, who called in after the Brandon Greyhound Walk.
Would definately recommend this event for all dog-lovers - a great day out!

Foster Home Needed Urgently

Yesterday Jodie got a call asking if she would take a dog in who had just broken his hock in a racing trial.
The dog was on the vets table at the track and was going to be put to sleep there and then if she didn't agree to take him :(
Although we don't have the space at the moment and funds are extemely tight, faced with this dilema Jodie felt that she had no option but to take this poor lad in.
So, late last night it was a mad panic to collect him and get him to safety.

Is there anyone out there who would be able to offer a foster home for this lad until his hock is healed and he is ready for homing?
He is a 3 year old black boy, who is said to get on fine with bitches.

Castledon Clean Up at Crayford!

This weekend we crossed the water and ventured into Kent for the Crayford Retired Greyhound Show.
Both Tootsie and Dumbo won first prize in their classes - well done boys! :) - Go Castledon!

Our next expedition is to Suffolk this coming Sunday (1st August), where we have a stall at Suffolk Dog Day.
This is being held at Helmingham Hall and everyone who attended last year said that it was a great day.
Here's hoping that the weather stays dry!

Lovely Greyhound Walk!

Had a lovely walk at the Rickmansworth Aquadrome - what a fantastic place to stroll with your hounds!
It was great to see so many Castledon hounds there - Lacey & Duke, Sonny, Benny & Gemma (of course!) and the lovely Tink. Along with our own hounds (Dumbo, Ace, Tootsie, Hero, Macy, Nikki and Jezza) I think that we can safely say that Castledon definitely ruled the waves at Ricky!
Thank you to everyone who took advantage of Carly's nail clipping clinic - as well as there now being plenty of well-manicured hounds about town, we managed to raise a fine sum for our rescue :)

Rickmansworth Aquadrome Greyhound Walk

This Sunday (18th July) we will be upping sticks and heading across the border into Hertfordshire, for the Rickmansworth Aquadrome Greyhound Walk.
This is being lead and organised by Andy and Jan, owners of Castledon hounds Lacey and Duke.
It will be great to see any greyhounds and their owners at the walk, which starts at 10 o'clock.
Carly will be bringing her nail clippers along to help raise funds for our rescue.
So, if anyone's hound is in need of a pawdicure, Carly's your girl!
Also, if anyone has any donations for our tombola, we would be delighted to take them off of your hands and repatriate them in Essex!

Tractor Fair Fundraiser

Spent this weekend at a Tractor Fair at Blake House in Braintree, with our tombola and awareness stall - Boy was it HOT! - We had to put the tombola prizes that had chocolate in them in the coolbox to save them from melting!

We had a really good weekend, with plenty of people visiting our stall and lots of people showing interest in our rescue.

Thanks to Eddie and Kathy for inviting us along and letting us use their tables and fridge!

It was lovely to see Claire, Dean, and Freddie with Slippy, Graham with Benny & Gemma and Steve and Mandy with the handsome Rodger.

Andrea, Dale, Nikki and Jez went to the GW walk at Danbury country park today - well, we did go, but we got there late and had to loiter in the car park waiting for everyone to return!

(-thought that it was better to loiter in the car park than by the toilets, LOL!)

Thank you SO much to all the lovely people who answered our appeal and brought goodies along for our tombola - your donations are very much appreciated and extremely useful to us.

Our once sad and dying tombola is now well and truly back in business thanks to your kindness! :)

Tombola prizes needed

As those of you that have come to any of our fundraising events may know, along with our awareness stall we run a tombola to raise funds for our rescue.

The tombola always proves to be very successful at the events we attend which means we are having trouble getting enough prizes.
We desperately need to get some more stock for forthcoming events, so we are calling upon Castledon supporters to see if they would be able to help us out by donating any items suitable to use on tombola i.e

Confectionary - boxes, tins, packets etc, toiletteries - unwanted gift sets, bottles of Wine, Bucks Fizz etc, tins of biscuits and packs of dog treats etc.

If anyone is able to help, we will be attending the Greyhound Walk at Danbury this Sunday (4th July) where we would be pleased to accept any of your tombola donations.

Great British Greyhound Walk

Today Castledon took part in the Great British Greyhound Walk at the Chelmsford venue.
There were an amazing 106 dogs strutting their stuff around Central Park - a truly amazing sight!
Amongst them were Elsa and Percy from the kennels, who made loads of new friends and took all the hustle and bustle in their stride.
We took our awareness stall along and Carly had her nail clippers sharpened especially for the event ensuring a swift and painless pawdicure for the steady stream of canine customers!
It was lovely to see so many ex-Castledon residents and their owners - Slippy, Joanne, Benny, Gemma, Lucy and Lola to name but a few!
Reckon there's going to be a lot of VERY tired hounds tonight......!

Jack & Pepsi on tour.....

Just had to share this letter that we received from our old pal Jack & his new friend Pepsi.......

'' Dear Jodie and Sandra,
Hi! - just to let you know what Pepsi and I have been doing. We have gone on our first big holiday (Portland, Dorset) with Ivor and Dee. Talk about a fun time!

We were in the car for 5 hours, with one stop. Ivor laid our beds out for us and we just slept.
The cottage that we stayed in was small but interesting - to get to the bedroom we had to go through a secret door and navigate some very narrow steep steps!

We hiked all over the 'island' - don't know how it works but it was uphill no matter which way we went! Pepsi wasn't too excited about so many walks, but she got better as the days went on.
I learned all about new smells and can now hold a sniff and keep the smell to savour in my nose for at least 5 minutes!

Had a 4 mile round walk along the old railway, where we met a lovely greyhound called Izzie.
Had a great time on the sand - I thought it was neat and hopped around a bit, but Pepsi absoloutley loved it and jumped up, twirled and danced around, acting like a bucking bronco!
Pity we couldn't be off our leads! Ivor thinks that we should have a sandpit in our back garden, ha!

Met up with another greyhound on our walk along Weymouth promenade, called Jack, would you believe! - Mind you, it was short for Jackie, short for Jacqueline.
Jackie's mummy told us that they had gone to the beach where doggies can be let off lead. Jackie was playing around when there was a big bang! Jackie then took off like a dart, following the exact path back to her home! Thank goodness the crossing light was green!
(This is why we shouldn't be let off of our leads!)

Time moved on rapidly, as it always does when you're having a good time. Glad to be back home but the memories of our big holiday linger in our minds and dreams. Ivor says we will have to go again soon.

Just want to give you two a great big lick and a thank you for my new best mate Pepsi and for Ivor and Dee...and our new home. I have the good life now!

We are delighted to announce Daisy has found a lovely new home and will be leaving soon.

Please take a look at the newly published stories of Cracker, Percy, Minto and Tink on their respective pages, they are all lovely dogs who will make terrific pets when given the chance.

Essex Working Trials Show

Well, the weather was kinder to us today than it was at our last outing to Barking Mayhem, when we got caught in a hailstorm! (-mind you, that WAS a Bank Holiday, so it had to be expected!!).

We took Minto along from the kennels who was very well behaved and enjoyed himself being Castledon's ambassador for the day. He also tried out one of our new 'I Need A Home' jackets, which looked great on him!

It was great to see everyone and in particular Lennie and his owners Sharon and Ray who travelled all the way from Hertfordshire. As his reward, Lennie had a spending spree on our stall and came away with a new house collar and one of our stylish spring coats, both of which he's modelling in the last picture.

Thanks to the organizers and Fiona in particular for inviting us along again :)

This weekend we're packing up our awareness stall and heading off to Chelmsford for the 2nd Essex Working Trials Society companion dog show.
We were invited last year and we took Dixie along with us on his first outing with us, where he was the perfect ambassador for greyhounds.
This year we're hoping to take a couple of dogs from the kennels along with us, sporting our new 'I Need A Home' jackets
Fingers crossed that the weather is kind to us this time! (- last year our gazebo nearly took off across the field!)
